Online food ordering and delivery service Swiggy has acquired Kint.IO, an AI startup, that specialises in applying deep learning and computer vision for object recognition, for an undisclosed amount.

The Bengaluru-based AI startup will augment the work Swiggy has been doing in AI, machine learning and big data as it looks to improve discovery for consumers and enable faster more efficient deliveries.

Kint.IO which was founded in 2014, will join Swiggy to boost its computer vision technology and superior consumer experience. Further, by welcoming both the founding members of Kint.IO into their team, Swiggy hopes to strengthen its expertise in the field of AI, machine learning, big data systems.

“The team at comes with an exceptional understanding and expertise in AI, machine learning and data sciences. This acqui-hire is part of Swiggy’s strategy to scale our tech prowess by bringing in entrepreneurial teams that can solve unique customer problems,” said Dale Vaz, Head of Engineering and Data Sciences, Swiggy.

According to Pavithra Solai and Jagannathan Veeraraghavan, Co-founders of Kint.IO, AI research has leapfrogged this past year but lack of data, cultural biases, inability to adapt to our diversity, had somehow always pulled them back when it comes to applying AI to India-based problems, effectively. And this is where Swiggy surprised them! They are confident that this new partnership will unlock immense possibilities.

With competitors like Zomato and Uber Eats zeroing in on the huge opportunistic world of food delivery, Swiggy has made a smart, yet effective move by betting on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This is Swiggy’s second acquisition after Dale Vaz came in!

The question is, Can Swiggy beat Zomato in its own game? Only time will tell!
